The breast cancer mortality rate in Uganda is high, at an estimated 30-50%. Per the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Breast Cancer Initiative (GBCI), high-income countries have achieved <10% breast cancer mortality, which is yet to be achieved in Uganda. We observe that the low accessibility and low reliability of the pathology process – including the long (more than three months) of turn-around time (TAT) for breast pathology – is a major cause of delay in the breast cancer patient treatment pathway and contributes to the high mortality rate of the disease. This long delay disproportionately affects people living in rural communities, who face transport, monetary, and cultural barriers amongst others, adding on to time in the pre-analytic phase for the patient.
Ekyaalo Breast Vision aims to decentralize breast cancer diagnosis and bring testing and results to the rural communities. Join us to find out more about how we are planning to achieve this with our partners in Uganda. If you have already been following our project, please join us to see our progress over the past 2 months.
