The Problem
Shortage of Pathologists
Developing countries and rural communities within developed countries have an extreme shortage of trained pathologists accessible to the population. In Uganda, a country of 46 million people, there are only 18 active pathologists.
High Diagnostic Turn-Around-Time
In many low-resource settings, the time that it takes for a woman to receive a pathology diagnosis for a disease like breast cancer is approximately one year due to delays in awareness and transportation, shortages in trained health workers and specialized equipment. The World Health Organization recommends <60 days to diagnosis to avoid adverse patient outcomes
High Burden of Breast Cancer
BIPOC women and women in East African countries and other low-to-middle-income-countries (LMICs) carry a 20x greater likelihood of mortality than in the United States, with 1 in 2 East African women diagnosed with breast cancer succumbing to the disease.
